Carlsbad Caverns National Park is located 27 miles from the city of Carlsbad in southeastern New Mexico. The Park, at an elevation of 4400 feet, has a semi-arid climate with hot summers, mild winters, abundant sunshine, low humidity, and approximately 10 inches of rainfall per year. Carlsbad (population 29,000) has all amenities and services including medical and dental facilities, motels, banks, restaurants, churches, grocery stores, department stores, and several recreation facilities. Information about Carlsbad and the Carlsbad area can be found at the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce. Schools include K-12, and New Mexico State University – Carlsbad Campus. Other services can be found in Albuquerque (280 miles), El Paso, Texas (170 miles), Lubbock, Texas (180 miles), or Midland/Odessa, Texas (150 miles). Recreation opportunities are plentiful with Guadalupe Mountains National Park located 50 miles from the city of Carlsbad, two state parks (Brantley Lake and Living Desert Zoo), and the Lincoln National Forest within an hour’s drive. Supervisory Facilities Operations Specialist
While based out of Sequoia National Park, Ash Mountain sub-district, Work locations may be in any area of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The primary purpose of the position is to manage the building and grounds Maintenance and operation and training of staff in the performance of their duties through secondary subordinate supervisors. Incumbent utilizes supervisor and journeyman Knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts to plan, schedule, assign, direct, and review the work of the Buildings and Grounds units in both parks. Coordinates work operations; solve problems related to the work supervised; and determine scope, material, equipment, and facilities needed. Responsibilities include asset anagement, fiscal management, supervision, condition assessment, construction, maintenance and rehabilitation of employee housing, administrative buildings, comfort stations; lift stations, and multi-use shop buildings. Responsibilities also include management of maintenance and operation of campgrounds, roadsides, picnic and landscaped areas in both parks. Also has oversight and supervision of historic preservation work on repairs to buildings and housing matching or creating exact reproductions of various components of historic buildings and fixtures. Should have strong familiarity with the trade skills and the ability to problem solves a full range of associated issues common to the building trades. Incidental operator of motor vehicles, trucks, trailers, tractors, skid steer loaders, backhoe, etc. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Chief of Maintenance. Incumbent may have occasional exposure to hazardous materials including, and not limited to, asbestos, lead, petroleum products, and other such chemical, and material, hazards common to the building trades that will require the use of personal protective equipment. Plan, organize, direct, manage, review and evaluate an augmented program to include responsibility for interior design/decorating, hazardous waste management, health aids, signage, laundry/linen/employee uniform operations and grounds maintenance; waste management and maintenance and sanitary and visual cleanliness for hospital floors, ceilings, window and walls to meet requirements. Facility Manager/Safety Officer
The park has a widely diversified infrastructure and operation complexity characterized by multiple developed areas within the park. This position manages a multi-faceted organization through the management of subordinate supervisory staff, multi-year/operational budgets, and the utilization of new information technologies. Manage and direct a Safety and Occupational Health program requiring the identification, evaluation, and control of hazardous working environments Plans, develops, and implements appropriate safety and health systems, processes, and programs involving a wide variety of hazards using occupational safety and health principles, procedures, and practices as well as regulations, laws, codes, and standards that bear on complex safety functions. These duties provide stewardship of assets/facilities ensuring visitor use and enjoyment as well as the protection of natural and cultural resources. Serves as the facility management expert and member of the park management team to develop and implement management strategies. Actively involved in decision affecting
overall park management policy and operations and contributes to the development and implementation of park management documents. Monitors and evaluates maintenance programs affecting park operations to ensure compliance with and application of approved management direction. Represents the park in public contacts, negotiates and collaborates with representatives of the service, federal, state and local agencies, historic organizations, universities and
private individuals interested in the park and the service. The Facility Operations Specialist takes such action and makes such commitments as they deem to be in the interest of the park and the service with the authority delegated by the superintendent.
Manages Facility Management Software Systems for cost effective management of assets. Performs and maintains asset inventories and condition assessments for the purpose of developing deferred maintenance costs for annual and multi-year plans.
